As an actress, Marcia Gay Harden attends her fair share of celebrity events. But the Family Equality Council’s Impact Awards earlier this month had special meaning to her: Harden’s 13-year-old son, Hudson, is gay, and the non-profit advocates for LGBTQ families.

“The cause is dear to me, yes,” Harden told Us Weekly at the event. “My son is gay. I just want to make sure he gets to have a family when he wants one.”

The Oscar winner, 58, and her ex-husband, Thaddaeus Scheel, are also parents of Hudson’s twin sister, Julitta, and daughter Eulala, 19. On the big screen, Harden played Christian Grey’s adoptive mother in the erotic Fifty Shades trilogy starring Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, and Rita Ora.

Harden, who calls the three movies “an event,” told Us it was “so fun” to “witness women just feeling that their sexuality was finally given a voice.”

Harden is just the latest to speak to lovingly embrace her LGBTQ child. In a 2014 open letter, Sally Field called raising her gay son Sam Greisman “one of the great privileges” of her life. (Field recently tried to set 30-year-old Greisman up with Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon!)

Though Marie Osmond is a practicing Mormon, she wouldn’t change a thing about her openly gay daughter, Jessica. “The God I believe in is a god of love, not fear,” she told Diane Sawyer in 2013. “I believe in [my daughter’s’] civil rights, as a mother. I think that my daughter deserves everything that she desires in life. She’s a good girl. She’s a wonderful child. I don’t think God made one color flower. I think he made many.”
